Why a circle?

On the name KOLO, and what it asks of us.

“Kolo” means circle in Ukrainian — the shape of a gathering, a dance, a conversation that has no head of the table.

We chose it because a circle is the most democratic form we know. It has a centre but no hierarchy; you can always make room for one more by stepping slightly back.

This space is built the same way. Around any given evening there is an artist, an audience, an institution and, often, a donor — and the work is to keep them in one circle rather than several queues.
